Generation V

Andrew Caddell was born 1732 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. He died 1825 in St Clair Co, AL.

Andrew is said to have left Edinburgh at age 14 after a fight with his father. Legend says that his father tossed him a coin and said "See how far that gets you in America."1 Andrew apparently stowed away on a ship,2,3 hidden in a pickle barrel,4 and was sold into indentured servitude when he arrived in the Colonies. His first master was abusive and cruel, and Andrew was purchased away by a Mr. Henderson, who felt sympathy for the boy.5 Andrew worked out the remainder of his indenture on the Henderson plantation, and ended up marrying his master's daughter.6,7

Andrew appears in an Albermarle Co, VA record dated 2 April 1751. He was released from indenture around 1753, and appears in Orange Co, NC by 1755. He married Jean Henderson around 1860.8
